Bull
Bull has strong writing, like a Bull. Bulls are known for their aggression, but their tendency to run is lesser known. Spain sponsors these bull runs regularly, allowing us to commune with the bull and see how much we have in common with these majestic creatures. The beauty of the bull is that when you mess with the bull, you get the horns. First spoken in The Breakfast Club, a transcendent film, an inherent beauty emerges. Nobody wants to deal with the horns. Yet, the bull, when it is a friend, will defend you by being a several-ton bull that can trample, crush, and fatally maim any opposition you might face. A good friend to have, a sinister enemy to have, a true embodiment of the mixed bag. Kindness is free, though, because meanness can be taxing.
Long ago, in the distant year of 2009, Bull began as a stapled-together collection. A halcyon year for music, and the cresting of chillwave music before ragewave took over, 2009 was a very creative year. The same year Animal Collective’s classic Merriweather Post Pavilion came out, it was a time of togetherness. Communities were established, and many writers came together under this umbrella of beautiful stories that were woven together like fine silk threads. Unfortunately, due to inflation, stories are woven together with polyester blends at best, resulting in less natural voices.
Jarrett Harley, the individual behind Bull, likes those natural voices. Jesus said that the meek shall inherit the Earth. Individuals who present a new take on masculinity are the ones that Bull looks for. Not all masculinity needs to be toxic, and, really, there is no need for it to be. Lots of toxic masculinity has resulted in this need to outdo one another in cruelty. I wish I could say this was just a single facet of life, but it permeates society – through movies, music, literature, etc. As someone who literally writes fucking poetry I doubt I could fall into this toxic masculine tendency, because I think that to be a good person in general requires a degree of compassion. Compassion is not weakness (never was), yet there seems to be some confusion on this fine point, and Bull is there to try and clarify things.
An online magazine, they publish physical copies to prove that the written word is far from dead. Real printed words are very much alive, and you can hold them in the palm of your hand.
