Farewell Transmission
Farewell Transmission have beef with Submittable. Have you ever used Submittable? Don’t, it is rotten to the core. The literary equivalent of a time capsule, Submittable is the least-checked website on the Internet, right after LinkedIn. People who use Submittable are aware that they accept the fact that no one will ever see their work. Engaging in a form of Theory of Obscurity, or the creation of a work of art without an audience, as documented by the Residents on their award-winning 1978 psycho-drama Not Available, Submittable applicants understand that their work might be published years after submission, if at all. Sometimes art exists online, in a purgatory, unseen by anyone properly.
I support Farewell Transmission in its ongoing, never-ending battle with Submittable. They do not use that site; instead, they are imploring the writer to submit via the antiquated method of email. While emails are certainly not checked regularly, they are still more effective than Submittable. Various formats and styles are selected to ensure maximum coverage, ensuring they stay a bit beyond the average literary magazine. Few literary magazines do that whole JPG or image route, and honestly, it is easy to see why. Comics have been considered lowbrow for a long time, and while the term “graphic novel” has tried to elevate their status by showcasing the art behind them, they still have a long way to go. Besides, none of those Marvel movies have exactly convinced readership that there are deeper themes there worth exploring, and that’s totally understandable.
Beyond the comics, there are the more standard attributes to the site. They take poetry and narratives and do so in limited formats. I will be honest – the no PDF thing floors me, but I understand it. Perhaps they do that rare thing of formatting and trying to edit their work. Few do that now, but in the past, when someone wrote a book, they had an editor to help them. I used to do editing work in the past, but it is a thankless, faceless job. Anybody who puts in the effort to edit, to work with a writer, that is a helpful thing. You are a more patient and understanding person than I, as I burned out very quickly in that position.
The site’s organization feels distinctly odd – there’s a lot of white space, which helps the words flow. Many different variants exist, ranging from pure storytelling to more abstract forms, which play nicely into their loose objectives of being different and a tad odd. Given how rarely I see focus on the visual side online, it is a nice treat to witness.
